I'm putting together an info packet for ESL families in my
district (East Brunswick). It will be for grades K to 12 and will
contain information about ESL school events as well as community
resources, I. E., adult esl classes, recreation programs, library

I am doing the same however we are
having a family night and inviting people from the community in to speak
with the families. We have the literacy volunteers of Somerset County and
Representatives from the Library to talk about eresources and to sign up the
families for library cards. I also have been in contact with the municipal
alliance to see if they can donate any coupons or items to welcome the

It would be helpful to include information about:

- the attendance policy/excused vs. unexcused
absences (add a simple sample letter that parents can copy in order to
notify the office about their child's absence)
- summer school info. (in some countries students
repeat grades unlimited times)
- the importance of getting dressed for Phys. Ed
(students fail Phys. Ed if they don't get dressed for a certain amount
- After school programs (including sports, clubs,
media center times, and tutoring sessions)
- A list of bilingual (identify languages)
speaking staff member names, phone numbers, and email addresses
- Talk to your school nurse to see if they have a
list of local clinics where ESL students and families can go to if they
need to complete a school physical and/or receive vaccinations.
