Hot List Q & A
Organizing Internet Resources
November 2014

Question:
I was wondering what you do in terms of organizing all of the websites that you find online? If it is just a document, I will often save it to Google Drive, but there are times when I just want a link to a site where there might be games or too many resources to save.

I have a bookmarks folder in which I try to book mark everything according to topic, but I can't use it across computers and it's not very practical as the only information it displays is the page title.

Does anyone use a Chrome or Firefox extension?
A website to manage bookmarks?
A blog to post a link and sort by keyword?

I'm just pulling ideas out of thin air, I would love to know how others stay organized!

Thank you!

My colleagues and I have created portaportals where we post links to various resources that we use. Just go to portaportal.com to create your account (it's free!) and you can add links, create subfolders to organize your links, etc.

We also created a shared Dropbox where we upload different files (like PDF or Word/Excel files) that we find/create, so that they're automatically shared. You can sign up for an account (also free!) at dropbox.com.

Hope that helps!

I do delicious.com. It allows me to copy and paste a link to websites I like, then organize them.

I pin it to a Pinterest board. I have boards for ESL Math, ESL Science, ESL Literacy, etc.

I use the extension xmarks for bookmarks, which syncs across computers and browsers. https://www.xmarks.com You can also use LastPass for syncing your logins and passwords. It is very secure, even more than the saving and syncing most browsers offer, and it is absolutely free! https://lastpass.com

I would suggest using Diigo. It is a social bookmarking website that allows you to store and access bookmarks from any computer as long as you've saved them to your Diigo library. You can also create and share lists which aggregate similar websites. A few other features include the ability to add a short description and keywords to a webpage as well as to leave comments and hold a threaded discussion about a website. It is also a powerful annotator tool that you can use to highlight and leave comments on website pages.
Best of luck!
