THE PEDRO J. RODRIGUEZ HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

 

SPONSOR

NJTESOL/NJBE is offering a $1500 scholarship for students who are or have been enrolled in ESL or bilingual classes at the secondary level. We request that you distribute the information to the guidance departments in the high schools in your district as well as to eligible students.  Please encourage them to apply.  This is the sixteenth year of this scholarship specifically targeted for the populations we serve. If you have any questions about the scholarship, please contact the Scholarship Committee Representative:

 

ELIGIBILITY

The applicant must be:

  1. a graduating senior who plans to attend a post-secondary institution in NEW JERSEY.
  2. a New Jersey resident
  3. a student who is currently receiving bilingual and/or ESL instruction in New Jersey or who received bilingual/ESL instruction in New Jersey within the last two school years (2007-2008 and/or 2008-2009)
  4. Referring teacher must be a member of NJTESOL-NJBE, Inc.

 

CRITERIA

The application consists of five items. Each of the five items is considered carefully in selecting the scholarship winner. Forms for Parts I-IV are attached. Item five must also be included in order to complete the application. Follow the directions explicitly. Incomplete applications will not be considered-ALL documents MUST be submitted in the same envelope in order to be considered.

*The complete essay MUST reflect the students’ own efforts without editing by others.

DEADLINE ***Scholarship applications and all required materials must be POSTMARKED BY March 5th, 2010 No exceptions.  Applications without all of the required information will not be considered. Do not send the required materials separately-All required materials MUST be received together. Any incomplete or late applications will NOT be considered.

PART III:                                            INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ESSAY                                          

(TO BE TYPEWRITTEN ON A SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER)

 

Applications will be judged anonymously. All identifying information must be written on the back of the essay, NOT on the front. Please use a separate sheet of paper to compose your essay around the question:  “Bilingualism is a 21st Century Asset.”  Limit the essay to 500 words.  Although you may discuss and brainstorm the topic with peers and teachers during the pre-writing stage, your final draft must be yours exclusively. 

 

The selection committee will base the evaluation of your essay on the message contained in your writing and the unique form in which YOU express it.  In summary, the committee wants to consider an essay for which you can claim ownership because it contains your true feelings and thoughts.  The essay must be your work with no editing by others.
