NJTESOL/NJBE ESL/BILINGUAL HIGHER EDUCATION

AND NON-TRADITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

SPONSOR:  NJTESOL/NJBE is offering a $1500 scholarship for students in ESL and/or bilingual classes at the post-secondary level: one traditional college student and one non-traditional student. Sometimes competitions such as these have few applications because it is assumed that there are too many other, more advanced students applying. Please take a look at the application materials and encourage any of your students who are qualified to apply. If you have any questions about the scholarships, please contact the Scholarship Committee:

ELIGIBILITY

The traditional applicant::

The non-traditional applicant:

An ESL/bilingual student who is matriculated and enrolled full-time in an institution of higher education and presently enrolled in ESL/bilingual courses.

An ESL/bilingual student who is matriculated and enrolled part-time or full-time in an institution of higher education and presently enrolled in ESL/bilingual courses.

Planning to continue attending a New Jersey college or university.

Planning to continue attending a New Jersey college or university.

A student who has maintained a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above.

A student who has maintained a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above.

A traditional student under 25 years of age

A non-traditional student older than 25 years of age.

 

APPLICATION

The application consists of five items. Each of the five items is considered carefully in selecting the scholarship winners. Forms for Parts I-IV are attached. Item five must also be included in order to complete the application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. A referring instructor/professor MUST be a member of NJTESOL-NJBE, Inc.

 

The application packet must include the following items, which will be considered in the selection of the two scholarship winners:

DEADLINE: Scholarship applications and essays must be postmarked on or before March 5th , 2010. You MUST observe the postmarked by date in order to be considered.

**Applications postmarked after the deadline of March 5th, 2010 and incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

Please use a separate sheet of paper to compose your essay around the question:  How the ESL/Bilingual Program at My College Has Changed My Life.”  Limit the essay to 500 words.  The selection committee will evaluate your essay by looking at the message and the unique way in which you express it. An effective essay should convey your true feelings and thoughts.

**Applications will be judged anonymously.  All identifying information must be written on the back of the essay, NOT on the front.* *

 

Although you may discuss and brainstorm the topic with peers and teachers during the pre-writing stage, your final draft must be yours exclusively, with no editing by others.  Be sure to include your name and contact information on the back of your essay.
