Spring Conference 2010
Supervisors' Strand

NJTESOL-NJBE will sponsor a strand at the 2010 Spring Conference for program supervisors and other administrators who have English Language Learners in their school. Here is the schedule of events:
  • 8:45-10:45 am: Rebecca Freeman-Field will present on Leadership for Achievement: Balanced Assessment Systems for Linguistically Diverse Schools. Improving the achievement of all students, particularly English language learners and students with disabilities, demands an internal assessment and accountability system that yields real evidence of student growth relative to state standards, program goals, and local benchmarks. This session presents the BASIC model, a state-of-the-art system that draws on common formative and summative assessments included in a pivotal portfolio. Participants examine how to use data to inform decision-making at the classroom, school, program, and district levels. (Hillsboro)
     
  • 10:00-11:00 a.m.– Raquel Sinai, Lori Ramella and Ericka Reed from the NJ Department of Education will present Initiatives in Bilingual ESL Education. Participants will develop an overview of NJDOE's initiatives in bilingual and ESL education. They will gain a general understanding about: the language assistance programs offered in New Jersey public schools, the state and federal requirements mandating language assistance programs for ELLs, ACCESS for ELLs (the required language proficiency test).   • 11:15-12:15 p.m. John Carroll, Program Manager from the U.S. Department of Education New York Office for Civil Rights, will speak on "Ensuring Equal Education Opportunities for English Language Learners". The presentation provides an overview of the responsibilities of school districts to provide equal access to education services to English Language Learners under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The presentation also discusses the responsibilities of school districts to provide equal access to information, services, and benefits to parents and guardians who may be English Language Learners. Ballroom C
     
  • 1:00- 2:00 p.m. Rubén J. Vázquez, Education Program Specialist from the US Department of Education will speak on Using Title III Funds: a National Perspective. This presentation will provide ideas for using your district's Title III LEP and Title III immigrant funds to enhance the district's language assistance program and receive the most benefit for English language learners. There will be examples of how districts, schools and consortia throughout the United States use the funds creatively and effectively. The supplement not supplant rules of Title III will also be discussed. Ballroom C
     
  • 2:00-3:00 – NJTESOL-NJBE Supervisor SIG Chair Diana Sefchik will lead the SIG meeting including a discussion on day’s presentations. Ballroom C
     
  • 3:00-4:00 – NJPSA will hold a meeting of their ELLs committee. Hillsboro
