Middle School Students8th Grade English Writing Challenge

ELIGIBILITY:

The applicant must be:

  1. 8th grade student in school in NEW JERSEY
  2. Arrived in U.S. less than 3 years ago, after March 15, 2022 (Please be sure to check the student’s records for ESL participation in other school districts or programs.)
  3. Currently receiving bilingual and/or ESL instruction
  4. Referring teacher MUST be a current member of NJTESOL/NJBE, Inc.


DEADLINE:

All sections of the award applications must be received on or before March 15, 2025.
No incomplete or late applications will be considered.

WRITING CHALLENGE:

To be written in school so it can be copied and pasted into the form below. Remember, teachers and others may assist by discussing the topic and brainstorming with the student, but the writing must be exclusively that of the student with no editing by others.
Topic: In 300 to 500 words, (in English) “Suggest three things that your school could do to help new immigrants adjust to life in the United States.”

Please note that if an essay seems to be edited by someone other than the student, the application will be rejected. All submissions will be reviewed for plagiarism and AI such as Chat GPT and must be authentic, original writing in the student’s own English.

DOCUMENTS:

To be typed, scanned, or photographed to upload to the end of the form.

  1. 8th Grade Certification and Permission Form – to be signed by the student, parent or guardian, and teacher
  2. Teacher’s Recommendation on a document to upload – Include:
    Student’s Name, School
    Teacher’s Name, Title, Cell Phone Number, and Email
    The reasons you would recommend your student for this award.
    (The recommending teacher must be a member of NJTESOL/NJBE.)

Applications may be started and saved, and an email will be sent to the applicant and/or instructor with the resume link.
Do not press submit until you have finished filling out the entire form and uploading all of the documents.
